Poems

while my coffee steeps

while my coffee steeps
I have a moment for Doris Day
coming home for Christmas
a few minutes to soak
in the melancholy
and bittersweet joy of the season
I allow myself to feel gratitude
as Nancy Wilson sings the Christmas waltz
gratitude for finally collecting
pieces of myself
long hidden
lost and doubted
but always sensed –
truths that belong to me
are finally mine
as Bette Midler dreams
of a white Christmas

puzzle piece

you can think you know yourself
you can love this version of you
that you found years ago
you've been lucky to walk your own path
for years
but you can still learn new things
you can still be surprised
when hidden truths are revealed
and you learn something about yourself
something you always had a right to know
a missing puzzle piece
that you built your life around –
the exact shape
