Poem

quintessence

own something with your soul
– that which cannot be taken away

strip away everything you are
take away everything you own
everything you know

what is left?
whatever that is
it belongs to you

find and cultivate your quintessence

Photo of a quiet road leading down a hill and up in the distance.
A single dark-coloured car just enters the photo on the right side.

Closeup photo of the tip of a red maple leaf hanging off a tree.
Water drops are on the leaf and swelling from the lowest tips are three clear drops of water, perhaps about to fall.

Photo of a quiet road just before dawn.
The road winds away. A street lamp glows brightly in the photo.
A yellow sign with a car and bike that says, 'Share the Road'.

Photo of a brightly coloured totem pole surrounded by low shrubs, placed in front of an apartment-style building
